The whale-headed stork, also known as the whale-faced stork, the boot-beaked stork, and the father of the shoe, is a tall bird that belongs to the genus of the whale-headed stork family of the order Pugaceae. It is the largest living head bird. The feathers are mainly slate gray, with a green sheen on the back, a short tail, and a short crested crown behind the head. The most notable feature is the huge beak, shaped like a wooden boot, with a sharp front end and sharp perimeter, capable of penetrating the crocodile's skin. It lives mainly near marshes, wetlands and lakes in the tropical regions of eastern Africa. It feeds on fish, frogs, snakes, insects, and sometimes small mammals and birds. The ability to fly is weak, usually only over short distances.
