The Air Jordan 4 was first proposed by designer Tinker Hathed as a defensive shoe and was designed with a lightweight, speed oriented basketball shoe design philosophy. The upper combines leather and nylon mesh to reduce weight and improve comfort, while the midsole continues the previous model with a separate, visible AirSole air cushion in the forefoot. The lace hole and heel lift are inspired by the basketball net, cleverly incorporating basketball into the design of the shoe.
