The Brodie helmet is a steel combat helmet designed and patented by John Leopold Brodie in London in 1915. Its improved forms include helmets from the UK, steel helmets, Mark I, and M1917 helmets from the US. Simply put, it is called a shrapnel helmet, battle pitcher, Tommy helmet, tin hat, and in the United States, it is called a dough boy helmet. It is also known as a dish hat, tin hoop hat, washbasin, combat bowling (when worn by officers), and Kelly helmet.
