The name "palm" first appeared in the Chinese pre Qin literature "Shan Hai Jing", which states that "the mountains of stone and green are mostly made of brown wood". Li Shizhen named the palm, also known as the bamboo palm, in the Compendium of Materia Medica. It is named after the hair strands in its skin that resemble the mane of a horse.
