It was the seventh World Cup held in Europe after the 1934 World Cup in Italy, the 1938 World Cup in France, the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, the 1966 World Cup in England and the 1974 World Cup in Germany. Italy's national men's football team beat Germany's national men's football team 3-1 to win the championship.
