Scutellaria baicalensis is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the family Lamiaceae and the genus Scutellaria; Stem branching, nearly hairless, or covered with slightly soft hairs that extend upwards; Root and stem fleshy, branched; Leaves lanceolate or linear lanceolate, blunt apex, rounded base, both surfaces hairless or sparsely covered with soft hairs; The flower stem is covered with soft hairs; Calyx densely covered with soft hairs, with edge hairs; The corolla is purple red or blue, densely covered with glandular soft hairs, and the lower lip has triangular ovate lobes; The small nut is black brown, ovoid in shape, with a navel like protrusion near the base of the ventral surface; Flowering period from July to August; The fruiting period is from August to September. According to the Compendium of Materia Medica, "Ling Shuowen is known for its yellow color." Huangqin, also known as "qin" in ancient times, is named after the yellowish color of Ling grass.
