At the age of three, he succeeded to the King of Sweden (1319-1363) and the King of Norway (1319-1343), who were called IV and VII respectively. He officially ascended the throne in 1336 and let his son succeed the king of Norway in 1355, called Haakon VI. A series of reforms introduced by the Swedish king angered the powerful, who put Albert of Mecklenburg on the Swedish throne and launched an armed attack, imprisoning him until 1371. After his release, he left for Norway.

Eric XIV (1533-1577) was the second monarch of Sweden's Vasa Dynasty. After his coronation in 1560, he began to compete for Baltic hegemony. During his reign, he led the Seven Years War in the North (1563-1570). He pursued a centralized policy but was paranoid and brutal, and a power struggle broke out with his brother John III. He was deposed in 1568 and imprisoned for life. Although his rule was known for its military and artistic achievements, the internal turmoil eventually led to his dethronement.

King of Sweden (1496-1560). Born into a noble family, he took part in the struggle against Danish rule in 1517. After losing the war in 1518, he was taken to Denmark as a hostage and fled back the following year. In November 1520, the Danes created the "Stockholm murder" in Sweden, killing about 100 Swedish nobles, priests and citizens, which became the fuse of the Swedish independence movement. He led a popular uprising in Dalarna County in 1521, defeated the Danish occupation forces in 1523, was elected king, and established the Vasa Dynasty.

The gilded crown adopts a medieval style, symbolizing Gustav Vasa as both a part of the old alliance and a part of the newly established hereditary monarchy. The helmet was used at Gustav Vasa's funeral in 1560, when witnesses mentioned a helmet decorated with a gilded crown. The helmet was purchased for the king by Klaus Heigel, the king's agent, in Augsburg.

This armor may have been manufactured in Alboga, Sweden around 1562 and sent to Antwerp, Belgium for decoration by goldsmith Elisaeus Libaerts. This armor was worn by King Eric XIV on October 2, 1564, when he returned to Stockholm with his military entourage after launching a military operation in Blekinge, southern Sweden.
