It is the largest existing species of rhinoceros, mainly distributed in southern Africa. It is divided into two subspecies: the southern white rhinoceros and the extinct northern white rhinoceros. The southern white rhinoceros has a larger population, while the northern white rhinoceros died in 2018 due to excessive hunting and habitat loss, marking its functional extinction. Large in size, adult individuals can weigh up to 2.5 tons and grow up to 4.5 meters in length. Having strong limbs and thick skin, with almost no hair on the skin, helps them dissipate heat on the hot African grasslands.
