Statues of St. John in Nepomuk

A very well-known figure in Czech history, he served as Deputy Bishop of Prague during the reign of Vaclav IV. He was the first in the Catholic Church to become a martyr for sticking to the secrecy of his confession. Under Catholic Church rules, priests have a sacred duty of secrecy over the contents of the confession, and St. John was killed for refusing to reveal the contents of the queen's confession to the king. He was thrown into the river from the Charles Bridge. Legend has it that five stars appeared on his head when he was dying. From then on, the stars and the number five were regarded as symbols of Saint John. St. John is revered for his adherence to faith and moral principles, and is a saint against defamation and against the flood.
