The green turtle is one of the larger hard-shelled turtles, named for the pale green color of body fat. Mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical waters, widely inhabited in coral reefs, salt marshes and seagrass beds and other coastal shallow water areas. It feeds on seaweeds and macroalgae and occasionally on molluscs, arthropods, or fish. It is a large migratory sea turtle that forages in a fixed area and lays its eggs in another. Female green turtles usually climb the beach at night to build nests, laying dozens to more than 100 eggs per nest, and the incubation period is about 50 days. Sex is determined by the temperature at the time of incubation, and at 28 to 30 degrees Celsius, the ratio of male to female is roughly equal.
