It is a small economic fish unique to the Orinoco River Basin in South America. It is an important local food fish species and is famous for its tender meat and strong fecundity. Mainly distributed in the Orinoco River basin in South America, common in the main stream, tributaries and floodplain lakes, preference for sandy or gravel bottom of the lower waters.
