With a split ammunition design, the shell weight is 55.87kg, and the propellant is available in two sizes. The design took into account modern Western cruisers with strong defensive power, so special armor-piercing shells were developed to improve the penetration effect. The design and construction reflects the Japanese Navy's innovation and improvement in the firepower of battleships and cruisers, which played an important role in the Pacific War.
