The eastern brocade turtle is a small terrapin, belonging to the genus brocade turtle family. The dorsal armor is smooth, flat-oval, usually dark brown to nearly black. It is the only turtle in North America with a dorsal shield arranged in rows, and its vertebral and rib shields are arranged in rows, making it easy to identify among extant turtles. It is an omnivorous animal. Its food includes snails, insects, crayfish, small fish, carrion, algae and aquatic plants. Young brocade tortoises tend to be more carnivorous, while adult individuals tend to be more plant-fed. Likes to inhabit slow-moving ponds, swamps, streams and lakes. It is a diurnal animal that sleeps at night on the bottom of the water or on objects partially immersed in water.
